The script explores historical myths surrounding the barnacle goose, a bird whose origins puzzled people in medieval Europe. Two primary theories emerged to explain the bird's sudden winter appearances without visible breeding behaviors. Gerald of Wales, in 1188, documented the belief that barnacle geese originated from barnacles growing on driftwood, a tale widely accepted in medieval bestiaries. A century later, Holy Roman Emperor Frederick II debunked this myth in his book through research, suggesting the geese bred in remote northern regions. Despite Frederick's findings, the myth persisted, evolving into a new story by the late Middle Ages. Aeneas Silvius Bartholomeus (later Pope Pius II) recounted a Scottish legend of a tree producing goose-like fruits that transformed into live birds upon falling into water, a story echoed in various works and oral traditions for centuries.

The problem with whether tobacco is a useful drug or a dangerous poison is that all drugs are also poisons, the difference is only in the dose. The problem was that smoking tobacco was done for recreation, and the recreational use of any drug is likely to be poisonous.

I do wonder if this isn't a case similar to the Capybara in which people intentionally DESCRIBED an animal in such a way that far-off Catholic representatives would agree to classify it as fish so that those people could get away with eating it on Fridays.

I remember going fishing with my grandad, (who was over 90 years old at the time and still very active with a sharp mind and one hell of a sense of humor) But he told me; "A fish once saved my life" Thinking this was a bit absurd I asked him; and how did it do that? And he replied; "I ate it" I still don't know if he was telling me one of his many tall tales or not. He died at 103 years old and he passed in his sleep. I'm hoping to beat him by living one year longer so I can brag a bit if I see him again.😅

Imagination of medieval people was fantastic. Damaskinos Stouditis (16th sentury) tells, with help of some ansient historical studies, about never-dying eagles and bears, that give birth to a piece of meat. It was supposed to be a "clay", that is formed into bear cub by it's mother

We find this kind of stories in all ancient cultures. I think the story teller wanted to point out the importance of cunningness in to war. In Homer's Iliad we find a similar trick the one with the Trojan horse which shows how the cunningness of Odysseus helped the Greeks to end the war and capture Troy after a 10 year siege.
